I set up this gate valve for my Bean Animal overflow and to this day it works flawlessly. Initially, I wasn't happy that the valve looked like it had a bit of oil around the inside closing mechanism, but I wiped it off and rinsed it and it hasn't caused any problems with my aquarium. I chose to go with the cheaper valve than the spears because I knew once I dialed it in I wouldn't have to be moving it too much.

Would highly recommend. Especially considering how cheap it is.

Edit 12.23.2017: After 5 months (received item in June, but didn't start using it until around July) of normal use on a reef tank sump system, the valve area has formed a leak near the valve (see picture). It's about 2-3 drips per minute at the moment, but obviously I can't continue to use this without risking the leak getting worse.
The valve still turns very smoothly, but the leak is unacceptable. I'll have to replace this valve, will likely look for a different brand.

I used this to plumb a herbie overflow system. This thing is solid and the valve works great, very smooth turning and stays in the position you put it. can't ask for more.
